Difference between All Natural and Organic Pet Foods

You may see some cat and dog foods advertised as "organic" and others as "all natural pet foods." The most important thing for me when it comes to my pet's food is that there are no chemicals, by-products, and preservatives, but I thought you might be interested to know the difference between the two.

All natural means the food items are not chemically altered or synthesized in any way, and they come from plants and animals. There currently is no standard required to be labeled "all natural," so read the ingredients carefully.

Organic means the food has been produced, manufactured and handled using organic means. If a product is labeled "organic" it has to meet standards set for organic food.

An organic food is not necessarily all natural, and all natural foods are not necessarily organic.

    The Friday Funny.... The Speeder

An old man walked into a car dealership and bought a brand new Chevy Corvette. As he pulls away from the dealership, he can feel the power and decides to take it out on the highway. He feels great going faster and faster, until suddenly he sees flashing lights in his rear view mirror. Not thinking, he pushes the gas pedal to the floor and soon he's well over 100mph, when he realizes what he's doing, slows down and finally pulls over.

When the officer arrives at his door, he asks for license and registration and comments on what a great looking car the old man has. After a moment of looking things over, he tells the old man his shift ends in 10 minutes and if he can give him an excuse for speeding that he's never heard before, he will let him go without a citation.

Well, the old man thinks for a few seconds and says: "Officer, 25 years ago my wife ran off with a highway patrolman, and when I saw your lights in my rear view mirror, for a moment there, I thought you were bringing her back". The officer handed his license and registration to him and said "Have a nice day, Sir". (author unknown)

    Winter Weather Safety Tips

With colder winter weather moving into the Northern US, I decided to post some cold weather tips from the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

    About Winter weather:
Exposure to cold temperatures, indoors and outdoors, can cause serious or life-threatening problems, especially for infants and the elderly. To keep yourself and your family safe, you should know how to prevent cold related problems and what to do if a cold weather emergency arises. For more information, click here.

    Take steps:
Taking preventive action is your best defense against having to deal with extreme cold-weather conditions. By preparing your home and car in advance for winter emergencies, and by observing safety precautions during times of extremely cold weather, you can reduce the risk of weather-related health problems. Click here for some steps you can do to prepare.

    Stay safe and healthy:
Serious health problems can result from prolonged exposure to the cold. The most common cold-related problems are hypothermia and frostbite. For more information on hypothermia, frostbite, carbon monoxide, and power outages, click here.

And that's how the fight started...#8

Last year, a husband decided to buy his mother-in-law a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift.

This year, he didn't buy her a gift.

When she asked him why, he replied,

"Well, you still haven't used the gift I bought you last year!"

And that's how the fight started...

    Caution about taking Tylenol

The following information is from Dr. Robert J Rowen's Second Opinion newsletter regarding the pain killer Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and the danger of liver and kidney damage.

You may be aware that acetaminophen can harm your liver and kidneys, has landed thousands of people in the hospital every year, and caused hundreds of deaths. You may think as long as you don't take it very often or don't exceed the recommended dosage that you're safe.

A recent study was done involving 145 healthy adults at two medical centers. All ate the same diet, and half were given Acetaminophen while the others were given a dummy pill every 6 hours for 8 days. Their liver enzymes were measured every day. Of the people given the drug, over 1/3 of them saw their liver enzymes triple in the 8 day period. Elevated liver enzymes are a direct marker of liver damage.

    Here are some natural alternatives:
*for a headache - take willow bark or capsaicin
*for inflammation - try curcumin, ginger, boswellia, or proteolytic enzymes such as Wobenzym.
*for pain from an injury - try a homeopathic remedy called Traumeel; its inexpensive, safe and works well.
So don't risk the health of your liver and kidneys by taking Acetaminophen.
