Selecting and caring for Poinsettias

Poinsettias are a beautiful and important part of holiday decorations. Especially with the trend toward artificial Christmas trees, garlands and wreaths, a poinsettia adds the feeling of nature back into our seasonal decorations. And with the many color variations available, you can match the plant to your decorating color scheme very easily.

Selection:
Select plants with stiff stems, no signs of wilt or drooping. Avoid plants in plastic, mesh or paper sleeves, or crowded in a display as it deteriorates the health of the plant by reducing air circulation. Be sure to cover your plant with a bag when transporting it home to protect it from the cold air.

Plant care:
* place the poinsettia in indirect sunlight- ideally 6 hours of sunlight per day.
* ideal temperature between 68 - 70 degrees
* avoid cold drafts or excessive heat
* water when soil feels dry - don't let plant stand in water
* fertilize after blooming season - don't fertilize while blooming
